Where did the name Green Banana SEO Come From?

Circa 2012, in a conference room in Houston, I found myself delivering a rather uninspiring SEO presentation. My presentation was crashing hard quickly;  I could sense the crowd’s interest waning. Determined to turn things around, I made an impromptu decision—to abandon my prepared speech and embrace and head for the whiteboard.

Armed with a handful of markers, I embarked on a journey to explain the intricate world of search engine optimization and the common mistakes people make when optimizing their websites. Green Banana - SEO Fruit Done Wrong Example

I decided to share a story about opening up a fruit store in California. It just so happened that earlier that week, Oprah had featured a segment highlighting the remarkable health benefits of bananas. I realized that if we wanted our fruit store’s website to thrive, we needed to rank it prominently for bananas.  However, there was no yellow marker to illustrate the bananas.

I picked up a green marker, and rather than picking another fruit ( because the word banana is more fun to say than kiwi or apple or celery, which isn’t even a fruit) I decided I would demonstrate how to rank a web page specifically for “Green Banana.”

I began by highlighting a common mistake made by many websites that offer more than one product or service. Typically, these websites would display all of their services on one page.  In the case of a poorly optimized fruit store, a variety of fruits, including green bananas, apples, cherries, watermelons, and more, are all on their homepage.

This unfocused approach dilutes the search relevance of “GreenBanana,” making it nearly invisible to Google.  Google’s job is to return relevance, so the algorithm hunts down the most important pages for the phrase Green Banana.  When Google comes across our original page, it sees all of these other fruits competing with or diluting the importance of green banana, so Google will pass by this page. To drive this point home, I used the green marker to symbolize the importance of focus. I explained that to rank for “Green Banana,” we needed to create a dedicated web page that revolved solely around that specific phrase. By eliminating the distractions of other fruits and honing in on the targeted keyword, our website would have a greater chance of ranking higher in search engine results.

The story of opening a fruit store and the challenge of ranking for “Green Banana” seemed to resonate with the crowd, making the complexities of SEO more relatable and understandable.

When I returned to our Boston-based office, I shared the story with the team and the name “GreenBanana” was born—representing the essence of focus and relevance in search engine optimization.

GreenBanana symbolizes our commitment to helping clients optimize their websites effectively. We understood that the path to success in the digital world required strategic thinking and the elimination of distractions.

By creating dedicated web pages focused on specific keywords, just like our dedicated page for “Green Banana,” we could help businesses rank higher and achieve their desired online visibility.

Instructions:

  1. Peel the GB’s and cut them into small pieces. Place the pieces in a bowl of water to prevent discoloration until ready to use.

  3. Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and green chilies to the pan. Sauté for another minute until the raw smell of the garlic disappears.
  4. Drain the GB’s pieces from the water and add them to the pan. Stir well to coat the bananas with the onion and spice mixture.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and add the coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix everything together until the bananas are evenly coated with the spices.
  6. Pour in the coconut milk and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Cover the pan and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes or until the fruit are tender. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  7. Once the GB’s are cooked, sprinkle garam masala over the curry and give it a final stir. Adjust the seasoning according to your taste preferences.
  8. Remove from heat and transfer the GB’s curry to a serving dish. Garnish with freshly chopped cilantro leaves.

Your tasty Green Banana Curry is now ready to be served! It pairs well with steamed rice, roti (Indian bread), and a light New England IPA with a drop of green food coloring.

Health Benefits Not Paleo Green Banana beer

First off, Green Banana beer is pretty gross.  GreenBanana SEO is based just outside of Boston MA, so we are beer drinkers and some of us are beer brewers.

We tried our hand at brewing GreenBanana beer and, well, lets just say we are better at SEO.If you are considering brewing Green Banana beer have a look at all the reasons it might be gross and see what you can do to mitigate this grossness when and if you try to brew it.
  1. Starchiness: GB have a high starch content, which can result in a thick and heavy mouthfeel in the beer. This starch is not easily fermentable by yeast, so it may contribute to a less desirable texture.
  2. Low sugar content: Compared to ripe bananas, green bananas (GB) have significantly lower sugar content. Yeast requires sugars for fermentation, and the lack of sufficient sugars can lead to a lower alcohol content or incomplete fermentation, resulting in an unbalanced or sweet beer.
  3. Astringency: GBs can have a slightly astringent taste, especially when consumed raw. This astringency may carry over to the beer, leading to an undesirable bitterness or harsh mouthfeel.
  4. Lack of banana flavor: GBs typically lack the characteristic sweet and fruity flavor associated with ripe bananas. Instead, they tend to have a more starchy and slightly bitter taste. This can result in a beer that lacks the desired banana flavor, making it less enjoyable for those seeking a distinct banana profile.
  5. Unpleasant aromas: GBs can have a grassy or farty aroma, which may not be appealing when present in the beer. The aroma profile of green bananas might not align well with the other flavors and aromas typically associated with beer.
  6. Complexity of fermentation: GBs can present challenges in the fermentation process due to their starch content and low sugar availability. Achieving a complete fermentation and balancing the flavors can be more difficult compared to using traditional brewing ingredients.

Still want to brew beer flavored with greenbananas?  Here is the recipe.  Best of luck.

Ingredients:
  • 5-6 green bananas
  • 2 pounds malt extract (preferably light or pale)
  • 1 ounce hops (of your choice, for flavoring)
  • Brewing yeast suitable for beer
  • Water
  • Priming sugar (for carbonation, if desired)
Instructions:
  1. Peel the fruit and cut them into small pieces. Place them in a large pot and cover them with water.
  2. Bring the pot to a boil and let the bananas simmer for about 30-45 minutes. This will help break down the starches and extract some flavor.
  3. After simmering, strain the banana mixture, discarding the solids, and returning the liquid to the pot.
  4. Add the malt extract to the pot and bring it to a gentle boil. Stir well to dissolve the malt extract completely.
  5. Add the hops to the pot and continue boiling for around 60 minutes, following the instructions for the specific hops you're using. This step adds bitterness and aroma to the beer.
  6. After boiling, remove the pot from the heat and cool the mixture rapidly using an ice bath or a wort chiller until it reaches room temperature.
  7. Once the mixture has cooled, transfer it to a sanitized fermenting vessel, such as a glass carboy or a food-grade plastic bucket.
  8. Sprinkle the brewing yeast into the fermenter and cover it with a sanitized lid or airlock. Place the fermenter in a cool, dark place and let it ferment for about one to two weeks or until fermentation is complete. Follow the instructions provided with the yeast for temperature and timing guidelines.
  9. Once fermentation is complete, you can optionally add priming sugar to the beer to achieve carbonation. Dissolve the desired amount of priming sugar in a small amount of boiling water, allow it to cool, and then add it to the beer. Bottle the beer in sanitized bottles and seal them tightly.
  10. Store the bottles in a cool, dark place for approximately two weeks to allow the beer to carbonate. Afterward, refrigerate the bottles before opening and enjoying them.

Green Banana Fritters

The BEST Green Banana Fritters you may never eat.  This recipe transforms green bananas into crispy and flavorful fritters that make for a delightful snack or appetizer.

Let’s get started!

Ingredients:

  • 4-5 green bananas
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro leaves
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 purple chilies, finely chopped (adjust to your spice preference)
  • Water (as needed)
  • Oil (for frying)

Instructions:

  1. Peel the GB and grate them into a mixing bowl. Alternatively, you can also mash the bananas with a fork or potato masher until smooth.
  2. In the same bowl, add the all-purpose flour, baking powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin powder, salt, chopped cilantro leaves, chopped onion, and green chilies. Mix everything together until well combined.
  3. Gradually add water, a little at a time, and mix to form a thick batter. The batter should have a consistency similar to that of pancake batter. Ensure there are no lumps in the batter.
  4. Heat oil in a deep frying pan or skillet over medium heat.
  5. Once the oil is hot, drop spoonfuls of the batter into the oil, making small fritters. Fry the fritters until they turn golden brown and crispy on both sides. This should take about 2-3 minutes per side. Flip them carefully to ensure even cooking.
  6. Once the fritters are cooked, remove them from the oil using a slotted spoon and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  7. Repeat the frying process with the remaining batter until all the fritters are cooked.
  8. Serve the GB Fritters hot as a snack or appetizer. They can be enjoyed on their own or with a side of your favorite chutney or dipping sauce.

Enjoy the crispy and delicious GB Fritters! They are perfect for parties or as a tasty snack for any time of the day.
